Families are essential to the success and growth of Special Olympics. Families know first hand the significant difference Special Olympics makes in the lives of individual with intellectual disabilities. Families are a constant source of encouragement and support.  They understand the importance of the dignity and integrity that is developed through sports and the commitment of giving your best effort.

Through Special Olympics, families find a support network where they can share their joys and the joys of other families.  Special Olympics is a place of hope and inspiration for families as they witness their sons and daughters accomplish even the basic growth and development of sports knowledge and skill.

Families are a valued voice and vital part of the Special Olympics movement.  Families can enhance their personal Special Olympics experience through:


Coaching -Special Olympics Tennessee provides opportunities for individual with intellectual  disabilities to train and compete in 18 different sports.  As in any community sports program, good coach are needed and family member often serve as coaches.  Special Olympics Tennessee provides coaches training programs throughout the year to help recruit and provide sport knowledge.

Training - Special Olympics Athletes train in preparation of competition.  Families can provide a strong support system for the athlete and assist in the training program by becoming a training partner, helping with transportation, providing sport skill instruction and participating in an overall fitness program.



Special Olympics Tennessee

General Volunteers - Family members can volunteer at local, area, regional or state competitions.  Call the state office to find out more about becoming a event volunteer.

Committee Members - There are 32 Area programs across the state of Tennessee.  Each of those programs are always looking for volunteers to serve on event committees.  Those committees can be for sport events, planning, fundraising, media and public relations, etc.

Mentors in the Athlete Leadership Programs - Special Olympics Tennessee offers a Global Messenger athlete training.  Family members can serve as speech coaches for athletes training to be public speakers share their Special olympics Experience with their community.

Fundraising
- Support fundraising efforts at the local and state level.  Many opportunities are available throughout the year. Call your local Area Director of the State Office to finds ways to help.

Local program leaders - Family members can also serve on the Area Management Team an local program organizational team.
