The Moment Everything Changed

A single jump becomes the start of strength, confidence, and belonging in Train 4 Life™

An athlete stood in front of a box, hesitant to jump. In past experience, even jumping onto a weight plate was too scary.

Dustin Gillum walked by and, almost casually, told her, “Just jump on the box,” and kept moving.

She did. And something clicked.

What seemed like a small moment changed her whole fitness trajectory. The fear that once held her back turned into confidence, opening the door to movements she had never known she could perform. For Gillum, moments like these are what define Train 4 Life™.

“Watching someone who is not confident develop confidence or overcome fear, it’s probably the coolest thing,” he said. “I’ve been coaching Crossfit for over 12 years, and seeing someone overcome fear is cooler than watching someone do like 30 muscle-ups in a row.”

Gillum, owner of CrossFit Pistol Creek in Maryville, Tennessee, has led the gym since 2016. His path into coaching, however, was anything but typical. Once weighing 320 pounds, he began his own fitness journey with little knowledge of training or nutrition, slowly building habits that would transform his life. That transformation eventually led him to coaching and now creating a space where others could experience that same sense of growth.

Before Train 4 Life™, Gillum had prior experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He had spent time working one-on-one with individuals in his community and often volunteered at his wife’s elementary school, where he would visit Comprehensive Development Classrooms (CDC).

When the opportunity came to host Train 4 Life™, Gillum didn’t hesitate.

“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” he said. “I don’t know that I have everything figured out, but I know how to have fun and treat athletes like athletes.”

That philosophy, treating athletes as capable individuals rather than defining them by limitations, is at the core of his approach.

“I never say disability,” he said. “I ask what your abilities are. What can we do? And then we figure it out.”

In the gym, that mindset translates into growth as athletes are improving their strength and confidence every week.

“The athletes walk around with a more confident nature about themselves and learn they can do things they didn’t know they could previously do,” Gillum said.

This is what makes Train 4 Life™ unique. It’s not just about progress measured in weight or reps. It builds confidence, courage, and belief. And much of that comes from the environment athletes are stepping into.

CrossFit Pistol Creek is intentionally built on connection. New members are introduced to others, conversations are encouraged, and relationships are formed inside and outside of workouts. That same approach extends to Train 4 Life™ athletes. Gillum makes it a priority to integrate athletes into the broader gym environment, like introducing them to other members and creating opportunities for interaction to ensure they feel like they belong.

“We try to be a family,” Gillum said. “What we do inside these four walls extends beyond these four walls.”

That culture has led to an overwhelming response from the gym’s members. Each week, a large number of individuals volunteer their time to support Train 4 Life™ athletes, so many, in fact, that Gillum has had to turn people away.

Volunteers work alongside athletes, offering encouragement and guidance, while also forming genuine relationships. The result is an atmosphere where athletes are fully embraced.

Gillum believes that is exactly why it is so important for local gyms to open their doors to programs like Train 4 Life™.

“It’s about inclusiveness,” he said. “Letting these athletes know there are things out there for them, that there is a safe space, that they are able, and that there are facilities that welcome and encourage their participation.”

For Gillum, the shared experience between athletes, coaches, and community members is what continues to drive the program forward.

“Watching the athletes progress and get more and more comfortable, that’s what keeps me motivated,” he said. “They make more friends, whether that’s other athletes or volunteers. You see athletes helping one another, encouraging each other, giving high fives; now they’re athletes together. Watching that grow every week is incredible.”

As Train 4 Life™ continues to expand across Tennessee, stories like this highlight the program’s broader impact. In a single moment, like stepping onto a box for the first time, an athlete can begin to see themselves differently. And with each session, that belief continues to grow.

This is Train 4 Life™ at its core. Building athletes into stronger and more confident individuals supported by a community that believes in their potential.
