A Doer With Purpose: Marshal Meier on Joy, Leadership, Giving Back

Being part of Special Olympics has been one of his most fulfilling experiences

For Marshall Meier, leadership starts with listening. Whether through his work in finance or role as a member of the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Tennessee, his approach is grounded in empathy, energy and gratitude.

“My dad was a teacher and a volunteer,” Meier said. “From a young age, I saw how much a difference showing up for people can make.”

That mindset has followed him throughout his career. After years of partnering with nonprofits and community organizations, Meier says that being part of Special Olympics has been one of the most fulfilling experiences, both personally and professionally.

“Being at the 2022 USA Games and watching our athletes win was incredible,” he said. “It’s joy, plain and simple.”

Meier is quick to point out that it’s not just about showing up for events or writing checks, it’s about building real relationships. At Bank of America, he has seen firsthand how volunteering and exposure to the mission of Special Olympics changes people.

“It fills your heart,” said Meier. “It grounds you. We give, but we get so much more back.”

One moment that stuck with him? Volunteering at a bocce event in the pouring rain.

“I was cold, wet, and kind of over it,” said Meier. “But the athletes? They were excited, smiling and not even fazed. That shifted something in me. It reminded me to be present.”

That presence fuels his leadership style: listen first, then act. He describes himself as a “doer,” but one who’s learned that actions mean more when they’re rooted in understanding.

Since joining the Board of Directors, Meier has been inspired by the organization’s structure, mission and especially the athletes.

“You come in thinking you’re here to help and you are, but you leave realizing you’ve learned just as much.”
